چکیده

Colliding beams of 70% polarized protons at up to √ s=500 GeV, with high luminosity, L=2×10 cmsec, will represent a new and unique laboratory for studying the proton. RHIC-Spin will be the first polarized-proton collider and will be capable of copious production of jets, directly produced photons, and W and Z bosons. Features will include direct and precise measurements of the polarization of the gluons and of ū, d̄, u, and d quarks in a polarized proton. Parity violation searches for physics beyond the standard model will be competitive with unpolarized searches at the Fermilab Tevatron. Transverse spin will explore transversity for the first time, as well as quark-gluon correlations in the proton. Spin dependence of the total cross section and in the Coulomb nuclear interference region will be measured at collider energies for the first time. These qualitatively new measurements can be expected to deepen our understanding of the structure of matter and of the strong interaction.

Status of Spin Physics - Experimental Summary

The purpose of this article is to summarize the experimental status of spin physics based on the material presented at the Third Circum-Pan-Pacific Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics. A total of 12 experimental talks covering recent results and future plans at DESY, JLab, SLAC, and RHIC-spin were presented at this Symposium. These talks successfully convey the sense of excitement in this fie...

QCD spin physics: status, and prospects for RHIC∗

For many years now, spin has played a very prominent role in QCD. The field of QCD spin physics has been carried by the hugely successful experimental program of polarized deeply-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering (DIS), and by a simultaneous tremendous progress in theory. This talk summarizes some of the interesting new developments in the past roughly two years. As we will see, there have ye...

Status and prospects of di-jet production in high-energy polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC

The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is carrying out a spin physics program colliding transversely or longitudinally polarized proton beams at √ s = 200−500 GeV to gain deeper insight into the spin structure and dynamics of the proton. These studies provide fundamental insight into Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). One of the main...

Exploring Nucleon Spin Structure in Longitudinally Polarized Collisions

We review how RHIC is expected to deepen our understanding of the spin structure of longitudinally polarized nucleons. After briefly outlining the current status of spin-dependent parton densities and pointing out open questions, we focus on theoretical calculations and predictions relevant for the RHIC spin program. Estimates of the expected statistical accuracy for such measurements are prese...

Aspects of four-jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions.

We examine the intrinsic spin-dependence of the dominant gg → gggg subprocess contribution to four-jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions using helicity amplitude techniques. We find that the partonic level, longitudinal spin-spin asymmetry, âLL, is intrinsically large in the kinematic regions probed in experiments detecting four isolated jets. Such events may provide another qual...
